Most vitally, the Fab Five consistently treat Skyler with respect, even when he’s not around, and appear to approach his makeover from a careful and affirming standpoint. Karamo even provides emotional support while Skyler renews his driver’s license, something which Skyler expresses deep gratitude for... But just as [the original show] has its problems, [this episode] has its own. The episode begins with the Fab Five watching video of Skyler’s top surgery with shocked expressions. “This is his top surgery,” murmurs Karamo, stating the seemingly obvious. This scene is deeply uncomfortable in numerous ways: besides the audio-visual “othering” of Skyler (separating him from every other man on the show by making his introduction so different while also reinforcing the medicalization of transness in pop culture), Skyler later appears unaware that the Five were allowed to watch his surgery video, remarking with some surprise, “you got to watch that?” This raises questions about the show’s already dubious policy on consent... Queer Eye is a show about well-heeled cis gay men dishing out corporate-funded makeovers and redecoration that many of their subjects could never afford on their own. This most emphatically includes Skyler, who was forced to raise $8,000 from his community for top surgery and needs at least $100,000 more to deal with complications — a problem the show discards immediately after acknowledging it, preferring instead to shame Skyler and his roommates for keeping a “cat pee couch”... One might suspect they didn’t have enough money to replace it. - Them . One of the things that makes me saddest about what viewers get to see is that you see so little. It makes me so sad for the world, because the questions I keep getting asked are “Are these guys really that nice? Complicated, beautiful and historically unrivalled, this groundbreaking film shows what is possible when a community collaborates to honour the legacy of an unlikely hero. -IMDb. Jack's Summary: Rather than a straightforward documentary about a historical figure, much of No Ordinary Man features auditions where trans guys read a script and put themselves forward as candidates for the role of Billy Tipton, who was a real-life trans male musician. It's not clear whether this hypothetical film will actually be made. No Ordinary Man tries to walk the line between this odd premise and a genuinely insightful commentary on trans manhood. Much of the time it succeeds, although I think it's somewhat bogged down by the strange approach it took. I found it weird that many of the guys auditioning to play Tipton did not look like him in the slightest, but I think the inclusion of drastically different trans guys is more of a statement about FTM diversity than accurately portraying Tipton. All that being said, this is a film that features heaps of trans guys at many different stages of their transitions, and with very different backgrounds. Marquise Vilson, Amos Mac, Scott Turner Schofield, Jamison Green, and Ryan Cassata are among the cast. One thing is for certain; if modern filmmakers (especially U.S.A. filmmakers) say they can't find trans male actors, No Ordinary Man is evidence that they just didn't try. Billy Tipton Jr. is interviewed, and he is very affirming of his father's identity. Historical footage is played, including interviews with Billy Tipton's family during the furore that arose from him being outed posthumously. In all honesty, I wish this had been a more typical documentary which focused directly on these segments. Please note that, while interviewees describe Billy Tipton as a "transmasculine" person, that is not a label he identified with during his life. He identified as a man and went to great lengths to prevent his trans status ever being known, wishing to only ever be known as a male. Utmost respect for his identity and non-disclosing lifestyle, in my opinion, would involve using only the labels that he himself identified with; man and male. As a trans man who does not identify with the label "transmasculine", yet has been labelled that way against my wishes, this aspect of the documentary bothers me. Unbecoming chronicles the life of Logan, as he fights to “unbecome” everything he’s been until now, that wasn’t really him in the first place, as we follow his story from early childhood, to a traumatic adolescence, and beyond. -Vimeo. Jack's Summary: I highly, highly recommend watching this film. With a runtime of less than 20 minutes, it has more worth and emotional weight than many feature documentaries. However, there are some serious trigger warnings to be aware of. Logan putting on his binder. The documentary opens with Logan’s morning routine, which involves someone assisting him so that he can wear a binder. We are then shown footage of Logan as a child, pre-transition, while he explains that he was born with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, meaning he's more comfortable and mobile in a wheelchair. He goes on to talk about his gender journey, including realising that he wanted to transition at seventeen years of age. He chats with a hairdresser about being excited to start testosterone, smiling happily as he describes the positive experience of being called a young man. Logan with his mother. We meet Logan's mother, who goes through childhood pictures with Logan and talks with him about his choice to medically transition. Though she has some concerns and worries about him using testosterone, she says that she supports him and trusts him to make the right choices. Logan describes how his relationship with his mother has become strained, due to his rejection of femininity and stereotypical mother-daughter bonding activities. Logan with his family. One of my favourite parts of this delightful, beautiful, amazing documentary is hearing Logan talk about bonding with his father, and listening to Logan's father talk about his son. Despite never meeting any other trans people prior to his son coming out, he completely supports him. He tears up, beginning to cry as he praises Logan's patience and guidance. Logan, sitting nearby, starts crying as well. Logan discusses being physically and sexually abused by his teacher when he was only fourteen years old. He emphasises that he is not trans because of his trauma, and this is echoed by Logan's father, who says, "His coming out as trans is just one facet of who Logan is. Logan is a visible minority, he is a person with a physical disability, he is a person with learning disabilities, he is a survivor." I am so thankful that Logan shared his story, and that cis filmmaker Navid Mashayekhi made this short documentary possible . UPDATE: I watched Unbecoming on Vimeo, but it has since been taken down.
